Winnipeg Blue Bombers were founded in 1930 as the Winipeg Football Club, which is its legal organization name. In 1935, before an exhibition game again North Dakota State University, that Winnipeg Tribune sports writer Vince Leah nicknamed the team the Blue Bombers of Western Football and the nickname has continued to be used as well as Winnipeg Football Club.
In 1935, the Blue Bombers became the first team in Western Canada to win the Grey Cup (23rd Grey Cup) by beating the Hamilton Tigers 18-12. They have won 11 Grey Cups, 3rd most in the CFL behind the Edmonton Eskimos (14) and Toronto Argonauts (17). From 1990-2018, they held the longest playoff drought of 28 seasons until beating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33–12 in the 107th Grey Cup. They hold the record of the most Grey Cup appearances of any team (25).
